Herald & Heart in support of Look Good Feel Better

Look Good Feel Better

As milliners and hatters, we are often asked by people who are about to undergo treatment to make them a hat in anticipation of their hair loss. Since we have opened our shop on Fulham Road, we’ve had visits from ladies undergoing treatment and looking for soft wooly hats to keep their heads warm. But they have also come in our shop for advice on how to wear a turban – the last lady who came in our shop explicitly asked for something that didn’t “scream chemo patient”.

As a woman, I can only imagine how difficult it must be to lose one’s hair and how hats and turbans can help regain your confidence. This lady was after something a bit more glamorous than the slip-on turbans so we showed her to use one of our silk scarves to tie a turban, and she was really pleased with the result.

That got us thinking. Sophie is now working on a range of beautiful ready-to-wear turbans to sell through our shop, and we got in contact with a charity called Look Good Feel Better to discuss ways of fundraising on their behalf. We all know of someone who is suffering from cancer so this is our way of showing our support to the local ladies that come to us for advice.

Why Look Good Feel Better?

Look Good Feel Better is the only worldwide cancer support charity, providing practical support for women struggling with the side effects from cancer treatment. It is important to us that we do this with the certainty that the money that we raise will go towards helping women through confidence packs, training for an LGFB volunteer or a workshop for local ladies at Breast Cancer Haven, where LGFB operates.

Finding out you have cancer can be daunting and life-changing and the added stress of the appearance-related side effects of treatment can be demoralising and very hard to cope with. This can have serious consequences on self-esteem and confidence at a time when a positive attitude is very important.

Look Good Feel Better is dedicated to improving the self-esteem, confidence and wellbeing of people undergoing treatment for any sort of cancer. It is their aim to improve their self-image and appearance through free group and self-help skincare and make-up workshops that create a sense of support, confidence, and wellbeing.

Workshops and Masterclasses are available in venues across the UK. They are conducted by trained Look Good Feel Better beauty volunteers who share their tips and techniques for minimising side-effects such as skin changes, eyebrow and eyelash loss.

Cancer can rob a woman of her energy and strength but with the support of Look Good Feel Better it need not take away her self-confidence.

Help us raise funds for LGFB!

Our fundraising efforts have direct applications and can make a huge difference to someone living with cancer. Every pound raised really counts.

• £5 provides a Confidence Kit to someone who seeks support at home
• £25 provides brushes, mirrors and cleansing products at our Workshops & Masterclasses
• £50 puts the smile back on the face of one of our beneficiaries at a Workshop

So next time you’re in our shop, buy a LGFB trolley keyring or give a donation at the till. And watch this space, Sophie is working on a fundraising project so exciting things are about to happen.

Love xx
